Colin Bellavance

Firefighter, Certified Level 1

Colin Bellavance joined the New London Fire Department in 2007 after a motorcycle accident took
the life of his classmate and friend. “I knew I wanted to do something with my life that had meaning and
direction; the fire department seemed to be the perfect answer,” Colin shared. However, Colin was not
new to the fire profession as his family has a history of service in the emergency response field - it was
a matter of time before he became involved himself.

When asked what his favorite part of the department is Colin replied, “..feeling the adrenaline rush
as we scream down Main Street!” He continued to say, “I also enjoy riding in the back of the Ladder,
or Engine, chatting with other members who I haven’t seen in awhile. It’s nice to check in and see
how everyone is doing.”

Colin was awarded the honor of being the 2009 Commencement Student Speaker as he had been the
class president since his sophomore year (2006-2009). As Colin began his stirring and heartfelt speech,
the faint sound of the fire department siren could be heard. Without missing a beat he raised his head, looked to the crowd before him and said, “Fire!”
The crowd broke into laughter. It was after Commencement when Colin found out that the siren was sounded to show appreciation for his compassion
and dedication to the department.

Although Colin received his sport management degree at Commencement he hopes to pursue a career in firefighting. He added, “Ideally, I would
like to be a part of FDNY, but I am also considering a career in the U.S. Coast Guard. As for now, I will use my degree in sport management to
begin a career in recreational development or coaching.”

Unfortunately for the department, this new career will take him to Ireland for the summer. The membership, officers and commissioners
would like to thank Colin for his dedication to our department and community. We wish him well in all of his adventures!
