posted Apr 15, 2015, 1:41 PM by Jason Lyon
April 8, 2015, at 1:12pm, the New London Fire Department was dispatched to a garage fire on Stoney Brook Road. Upon arrival, heavy fire was found in the attached garage and extending into the house. Two hand lines were stretched and knocked down the majority of the fire in the garage and first floor. Crews moved to the second floor of the house while attempting to locate the fire that was spreading through a crawl space and the attic. While attacking the fire on the second floor a smoke explosion (back-draft) occurred causing the ceiling to collapse on four firefighters. None of the firefighters were injured and the rest of the fire was knocked down saving the house from serious fire damage. The New London Fire Department was joined on scene by Newbury, Sutton, Sunapee, Warner and Wilmot Fire Departments and Springfield Fire covered the New London fire station. Embers from a fire pit being used for maple sugaring is believed to be the cause of the fire.
